How did you start competing in your sport and how long have you been competing?

My first powerlifting meet was August 2008. At the time, I was a Junior at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, AR. Prior to that competition, I had be training with David Shirley for about a year. I think David had only competed in one or two competitions before then. I started in powerlifting because I was training with David and he was training for powerlifting, so I just did what he did. I had always been a fairly strong growing up and played many various sports. After high school sports ended, I wanted something to keep me active and strong so powerlifting felt like a natural transistion.

What is your favorite type of training right now? With a family, a busy job and all the Invictus stuff, really any training I can get in is good. I have and always will love powerlifting but in recent years I was introduced to obstacle course racing by my brother-in-law. It's a whole different beast and definitely presents new challenges.

What is your supplement routine? I am a coffee fanatic so that's my preworkout on most days. I have to confess, however, I am pretty partial to the Bang® energy drinks. I will also occasionally use protein and creatine, but I don't really have a routine staple of supplements.

What is your favorite exercise in gym or in competition? Deadlift. It is just that primal, raw show of power. A close second is squat, but if squat is called the King of Lifts, the deadlift has to be the God of Lifts!

What's in your gym bag? Weight belt, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves, lifting straps, lacrosse ball, squat shoes, Converse®, chalk, small first aid kit and athletic tape.

What do you like to do outside of the gym? I like to spend time with my beautiful wife, Ashlee, and our two kids...Aurora (12) and Logan (11). We like to travel, camp, fish, hike and spend time with extended family.

What is your biggest gym pet peeve? RERACK YOUR WEIGHTS!!! If you can load the bar with them, you can freakin' put them back. I also despise show-offs.

Do you have any heroes/mentors in the sport? It has fluctuated over the years but some of the people I've looked to when planning my training have been Dan Green, Hafþór Björnsson, Jon Call (Jujimufu), Chad Wesley Smith, Laura Phelps Sweatt, Dave Tate, and Brian Shaw just to name a few that first come to mind.

What are your goals for the future? I want to get back to being more competitive and participate in at least 2 or 3 powerlifting competitions a year. I would also like to hit that elusive 700 deadlift I've been chasing nearly my entire lifting career.
